The 2018 Carte Blanche The Mark, Napa Valley is our new Bordeaux blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petite Verdot. Select vineyards and blocks were chosen and farmed specifically to attain a dense, rich wine framed by delicate fine-grained tannins. Beckstoffer’s Orchard Vineyard Merlot offers a plump & full mid-palate while providing ample nuance. Beckstoffer’s Missouri Hopper Cabernet Sauvignon in Oakville provides a full spectrum of rich and dark fruit, while the Sage Ridge Vineyard Cabernet Franc from Sage Ridge Canyon offers nuances of tobacco, plum, and roasted poblano. A beautiful and diverse nose reveals red fruit notes atop blackberry, cassis, faint baker’s chocolate, and forest floor. The palate is full-bodied and layered, showing heady notes of liqueur, cassis, black cherry and spice box. Ultra-silky with a mile long finish. 150 cases produced. JD 96+, JS 96, WA 94+
There are two Bordeaux variety releases, both beautiful wines. The 2017 The Mark checks in as 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, all brought up in new barrels. This smoky, gravelly mineral (almost Graves-like) effort has loads of ripe dark fruits as well as medium to full body, a complex, nuanced bouquet, terrific purity, and integrated, ripe tannins. It’s a classic, balanced Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley to enjoy over the coming 15+ years or more. Jeb Dunnuck
